Shiretoko 知床
Inscribed 2005NaturalHokkaido
The Shiretoko Peninsula in north-east Hokkaido and its surrounding sea form one of Japan's richest ecosystems. Drift ice reaches here in winter — the lowest latitude in the Northern Hemisphere — feeding food webs that sustain salmon, Steller's sea eagles, Blakiston's fish owls, bears, seals and whales.
