Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama 白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落
Inscribed 1995CulturalGifu, Toyama
Three mountain villages — Ogimachi, Ainokura and Suganuma — famous for gassho-style farmhouses whose steep thatched roofs, built without nails, shed heavy snow. The villages' economy rested on mulberry trees and silkworms, and their communal way of maintaining the roofs survives today.
