Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region 「神宿る島」宗像・沖ノ島と関連遺産群

Inscribed 2017CulturalFukuoka

Okinoshima, an island 60 km off Kyushu, has been worshipped as a goddess since the 4th century; tens of thousands of votive offerings from rituals for safe voyages survive there. On the mainland, the Munakata Taisha shrines continue the worship, and a group of royal tombs completes the story. The island itself remains off-limits to the public.
